Postcard 2030
I’m starting a short series called Postcard 2030: a thought experiment on what an AI-first organisation will look like by the end of this decade, and what leaders can start building today to get there.

By 2030, I expect the org chart of an AI-first company to be a map of decisions.
Agents handle most of the execution. Humans are still in charge of running the company and making the major decisions. What changes is the shape: flatter, with fewer layers and decisions made closer to the work.
Picture a CEO sitting down with the executive team in 2030. Nobody walks through slides. Agents prepared the performance pack overnight: revenue against plan, cash position, pipeline, and the variances worth discussing. So the meeting covers three things:
Decisions the agents escalated
Decisions the executives overruled
Rules that need changing
That’s governance in practice. Humans decide where every decision sits:
Agents decide alone: routine and easy to reverse.
Agents propose, a human approves: pricing exceptions, contract changes.
Humans decide: strategic, irreversible or relationship-defining calls.
Every agent has a named human owner, who can widen or narrow its authority at any time.
I’m convinced mid-sized companies get there first. Fewer layers means less to redraw.
The awkward version of 2030 is easy to picture too: agents finish the work instantly, then wait for approval in the same queue we have today.
So, back to 2026. The companies that run this way in 2030 start now, in two places:
Workflows that matter to the business plan, where better execution moves revenue, cost or speed.
Teams that can direct AI, review its work and improve it.
